A Word about Retreating

When you think of retreating, what comes to mind?  Do you think of a weekend get-away with friends in some quiet, peaceful place?  Or, do you think of staying up for 48 hours straight, eating junk food, and playing crazy games with a group of hyperactive teenagers?  Whatever your concept, have you ever thought that retreating is also a military tactic?  Troops under heavy siege are summoned to draw back in order to re-group, be refreshed, and re-strategize.  This is often done with the intention of returning into battle to continue the assault and to hopefully advance.

And so it is with our spiritual life.  The Bible makes it clear that this life is a spiritual battle (Ephesians 6:12).  The Apostle Peter reminds us in 1 Peter 5:8, “your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour.”  Our lives are constantly bombarded with attacks that seek to destroy our defenses and cause us to fall into sin.  Even the routine things of life can weaken our resolve and leave us vulnerable to attack.  How can we continue to stay in the battle day after day and remain effective?  One solution is to apply an old military concept – RETREAT!

Getting away for an extended time of fellowship, worship, encouragement, instruction, prayer, and solitude does you soul a tremendous amount of good.  Even Jesus withdrew for periods of time in order to pray and commune with His Father.  This spiritual “break in the action” refreshed Him so that He could return to ministry.
